Natahlia Joan-Rose BirchMe when I was a baby :)
I was born in Darwin Australia on October 1, 1993 to parents Jacqueline Gough and Michael Birch. I have one older sister named Tilly, who is 7 years older than me. When I was 9 years old, my dad and I packed up our house, sold everything we couldn't take with us and got on a plane to come to America. The thing I remember the most about coming over here was the time change. I left australia on November 14th, 2002, and arrived in Colorado on the same day. The flight was 23 hours. After getting settled down in Rifle Colorado, I met my new family. Since my dad had got married, I now had 3 new sisters, I was an aunt, and had a bunch of other new family members. The most impressionable one is my cousin (actually, I'm her aunt but she's older than me) Chelsie Shuster. She is the first person I ever met in America. She showed me snow for the first time, and we even traded accents. I have so many memories with this girl and even after our families split, we still talk all the time, and stay close. A few more years down the road, I started middle school and moved to Glenwood Springs. During my 7th year in middle school, my dad and I got horrible news. We had been denied permanent residency because of my dads last divorce. We went to court in Denver and were told that we had to leave the country and re-apply for residency. After getting that news, my dad and his girlfriend Debbie got married and we got on the next flight back to australia to start all over again. During this time we lived in the most beautiful part of Australia I've ever seen. We lived in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. I loved that the beach was walking distance from my house and the whole place was just breath taking. Since we didn't know how long we were going to be there, I was enrolled in school. It was called Maroochydore High and the entire school is outdoors. The only downfall of this school was its hideous uniform. Also while we were in Australia I got to visit my sister who at the time I hadn't seen for 5 years. Finally we got an interview at the US Consulate to discuss our Visas. We traveled down to Sydney, and waited for what felt like a lifetime, but finally got the OK to go back to Colorado. I was thrilled! I had only missed out on 4 months of my schooling in Colorado, and I couldn't wait to see all of my friends! Fastforward somemore and I get into High School over here. I started out at Glenwood Springs High and didn't like the teachers or the people that went there because of how judgemental they were and how quick they were to tell me I was never going to make it. I transfered over to Bridges High in Carbondale but soon left there because of the same reason. I never went to school because I didn't have the support system. I felt like all eyes and conversations were on me. I even dropped out for a year and just worked full time because I was tired of school and I felt like school was tired of me. I was going to get my GED through Colorado Mountain College but soon stopped trying with that because I realized I wanted to graduate with my friends and my class. Thats when I started learning about Yampah Mountain High. I had never looked into it because I was told by Glenwood staff, and Bridges staff that Yampah was not even worth it. I guess its true when they say you have to experience it for yourself to make a real judgment. I started my senior year at Yampah late last year, and now I question why I didn't come earlier. This school has a totally different environment, it feels like home away from home. For once I felt like I was accepted because of who I am, not what I have. I'm still the biggest procrastinator EVER, but I started this year out with needing 19 credits, and I'm down to 3. This school has helped me get somewhere I never thought I would be. I'm hoping that after I graduate, I go to a culinary school that will help me achieve my next goal; Becoming a Personal Chef.
